One Day Poem Pavilion

Hey all!

I’m Jonterri, a first year student in UVA’s MFA program for poetry. I’m fascinated by different ways that poetry is able to reach a wider audience, so the One Day Poem Pavilion thrilled me.

Jiyeon Song constructed the One Day Poem Pavilion as a Master’s thesis project.  Over the course of 5 hours, as the light shifts throughout the day, new lines of the poem are revealed.  I love this! I feel like this is an excellent way to get people to really experience poetry without thinking that what they are experiencing is poetry. If someone wanted to see the entire poem display they would have to watch it for 5 hours. That’s 5 hours focused on poetry! It’s like a poetic sneak attack.

The poem is a Sijo, a Korean form.  I’d never heard of that form so that’s another reason to appreciate this project.  Go to the Experiential Typography site and check out the time lapse movie so you can get the full experience.

Please feel free to share any interesting way that you’ve seen poetry reach more people. I’d love to hear it!
